Week 12!!! I am very pleased with the products I have made in the past 12 weeks. I am also glad that I got to do this along with my grandmother. I just don't think that sewing is something that I want to continue to do on a regular basis. It was really good to learn some basics so if I ever have to sew on a button or anything I'll know what I'm doing. The first couple of weeks of this project were the best out of the entire thing. I was very determined to complete this project. Then about week 7 or 8, I started to lose interest in sewing. Overall, I'm glad that we did the genius hour project because even if I didn't find something that I love to do, I at least know what I don't want to do.

Only one more week until the entire project is over!! I didn't really believe Mr. Barker when he said that twelve weeks would go by fast, but it really has. There wasn't much time this week to make anything big. We just continued to make more scarves this week. We did the same exact thing except we used different colors. I think my grandma is getting tired of making stuff and I'm going to be honest and say that I've been pretty slack at coming up with stuff to do and finding the time to go to her house and really work on something. But we have made it work and I'm pleased with what we have come up with so far.
Week 10!!! We had a change of plans. Instead of stitching something we decided to go with something simple this week. We made some VERY simple scarves. I didn't have much time to sit down and really work for a good amount of time so that is why we decided to do that this week. This project has also made me realize that I have very busy life. I feel like I have said something about being busy every week so it has really opened my eyes to that. Anyways, we started with t-shirt material. We cut four inch strips that were in a circle. We didn't have to do any hemming because the edges curled up naturally. And that is all that we had to do. We made two of them. One for me and one for her. And that's it for week 10.
It is hard to believe that we are already on week 9 of this project!!! I won't be able to learn how to make scrunchies this week because my friend that was gonna teach me is going to the beach for Thanksgiving and won't be back until Sunday afternoon. We were having a hard time coming up with things to make. Even though my grandma is like an expert, there are some things she can't or doesn't know how to make so that limits our options for new projects. We still have the idea of stitching something in the back of our heads so we aren't completely out of things to do. I think we are going to have to go with that idea though. It will hopefully be something quick that I can do while I wait for my friend to teach me how to make something else.
This week went really well. We are running out of ideas of what to make though. This week we made a shoe bag. We took two pieces of material and sewed them together on two sides. Then we took two more pieces and sewed them together on the two opposite sides. This created a giant pocket. We then sewed a big line down the middle to create two separate pockets. Each pocket is big enough to hold a pair of shoes in it so this bag holds two pairs of shoes. I would have to make a good amount of these bags to fit all of my shoes in there but I don't have time for that. I have gotten more things made in this project than I thought I was going to be able to. I'm really happy with how much and what I have created so far. I feel like it was okay to have an off week last week because I feel like I am ahead of where I intended to be when I first started this project. I'm thinking about making scrunchies because my friend took apparel last year and learned how to make them so maybe she will teach me. Come back for week 9!!!!
This week has been a crazy week even though we had Monday and Tuesday off. I spent those two days working with my group in AP World to get our music video together. That took more time than I thought it would. I knew I wasn't going to be able to work on anything the rest of the week because I have a lot to do this weekend. So needless to say, I didn't get much done. I have thought about some more projects that I could do, but I need to talk about them with my grandma before deciding because she's the one that will be helping me. I have thought about stitching something. A couple years ago I stitched a dragonfly to go in the middle of a prayer quilt that we made to give to my grandpa. I really enjoyed doing that because it wasn't hard to get it started and didn't take very long to do. That is pretty much it for this week. Stay tuned!
We are now halfway through the project and I am very happy with where I am at. So far I have created a pillow, pajama bag, pillow cover, and a blanket. We made the blanket this week. We had to use badding when creating the blanket. Badding is what is put in the blanket to keep the heat in and keep you warm. We sewed the badding to the back of the blanket and then sewed the front on. Once that was done, we had to sew knots in random spots of the blanket. This will keep the badding from moving around and will hold it in one spot. This week was a really fun week because I got to spend a lot of time with my grandma. Instead of just going to her house one day after school, I used this past Friday that we had out of school to work on the project. We did a lot more than just work on the project. We went out to eat and went shopping together and it was fun to have a day to spend with her. Come back for week 7!!!
Welcome back!!! We have a little change in our game plan. Instead of making an actual body pillow, we are going to make a cover to go over the one I already have. We are still using the same material that was used to make the previous pillow. It will not match the colors I have in my room but why waste money on new material when we have plenty of it left over? I have to give credit to my grandma for coming up with the idea of making a pajama bag as well. In the mornings after you have put your clothes on for the day, you can put your pajamas in this bag and not have to worry about them laying out in your room. She's a genius, I know. I sewed on the borders of the bag this week. I feel really good with where I am at in this process. I didn't know where this journey would take me when it first started but I'm liking where it's going. Stay tuned for next week's blog!!!
We're on week 4 and we are also 1/3 of the way through this project!!! I have officially finished my initial goal of this project which was to create a pillow of some sort. We went out to get the stuffing and came back from the store ready to finish the pillow. We bought another pillow rather than buying a bag of stuffing. The pillow we bought was pretty big compared to the size of the pillow I was making. I didn't think we would end up using all of the stuffing out of it but once we started stuffing my pillow, we realized we could have put more in there. Instead, we decided that the pillow would be fine with the amount it had. I hand stitched the hole where we stuffed it and that was the final touch to the first item! Even after using some of the fabric to make my pillow, we still have a ton of it left. My grandma suggested the idea of making a body pillow next. I was on board with this idea the minute she said it. She had found some of the stuff you put in blankets that keeps you warm when she was looking around in her basement and decided that we could use that to create a body pillow. I am very content with where I'm at and very excited to start the journey of making the body pillow
Wow! We are already a quarter of the way through this project. It's kind of hard to believe. I feel pretty confident in where I am at in my sewing journey. This week was a little difficult to find time to work on the pillow due to a very busy week. This week, I worked on the backside of my pillow. Last week, I put the borders on the front side of the fabric. We didn't do a whole lot of work on it this week but, we sewed the two fabrics together to create the actual pillow. I left a little hole in one of the sides so I can put the stuffing in the pillow. But, we did not have any stuffing this week so that is where we had to stop. Next week we will have the stuffing and then we have to sew up the hole and then we will have a pillow! We've started to talk about more things that we could make but you will have to come back next week if you want to find out what those ideas are;)
